THE WINNERS
…and me! Denmark won me £4 in the work sweepstake for scoring the fastest goal!
Hazard scores Belgium’s 2nd goal in the 82nd min.
Umtiti’s header in the 51st minute.
“was is an own goal?” no, it just touched onto Fellaini’s lovely hair.
Everyone loves Gareth Southgate and matchday was named ‘Waistcoat Wednesday’ (by no one except the newspapers).
It all started so well! Trippier scored from a free kick in the first 4 minutes! Everyone in the pub sang ‘football’s coming home!’ and spilt beer.
Croatia equalised, and then scored again in extra time and England’s dream of winning the World Cup were dashed.
Of course, everyone in the pub was disappointed, but the DJ put on ‘You Got The Love’ and we all danced and celebrated and cheered the England Team.
Lloris has made some amazing saves this World Cup.
I suspect that he may be putting magnets in the ball.
Muslera’s own goal

The 10s.
Uruguay 2 – 1 Portugal
Ronaldo and his weird shorts action.
Cavani scores 2 goals.
Spain 1 +3 – 1 Russia +4
Penalties
Croatia 1- 1 Denmark
It was exciting for the first 4 minutes, when both teams scored, but then it got a bit dull. It went to extra time and then penalties.
Most interesting moment was realising that everyone on the pitch except the goalies are in red/white/black.
hmmm… bored….. LOOK! I’M ON TV!
darn…. lost on the sweepstake…
Brazil 2 – 0 Mexico
This World Cup has been quite bland for outrageous hair-dos. The Mexican team had fun with a bottle of bleach, strangely on the day that my colleague Adam came in to work with freshly bleached hair. This led to us speculating that he was moonlighting as a Mexican footballer. Sad to see Mexico knocked out.
Belgium 3 – 2 Japan
Chadli scores Belgium’s 3rd goal 20 seconds before the final whistle and saves us all from extra time.
Japan help tidy up the stadium after the game, even though their team is knocked out.
Colombia 1- 1 England 3
England win the penalties. For. The. First. Time. Ever.
Some of my favourite moments of games I watched.
Russia 5 – 0 Saudi
The opening game! Russia score their 5th goal from a free kick in the 92nd minute.
Egypt 0 – 1 Uruguay
This was a dull game. The most interesting thing about this game was Rodriguez coming on and noticing that the ‘7’ on his shirt was quite a nice font.
Russia 3 – 1 Egypt
Dzyuba scores Russia’s 3rd goal.
Uruguay 3 – 0 Russia
36 mins in Russia are two goals down and Igor Smolnikov gets a red card.
Morocco 0 – 1 Iran
No boots, no problem.
Bouhaddouz scores an own goal in 95th minute and Iran wins the game.
Portugal 3 – 3 Spain
“Sweet as a nut.” Nacho scores Spain’s 3rd goal.
Portugal 1 – 0 Morocco
Ronaldo falls over a lot.
Iran 0 – 1 Spain
Waiting to hear the VAR results to find out if Iran’s goal is offside.
Bundle!
Spain 2 – 2 Morocco
Boutaib scores!
France 2 – 1 Australia

Costa Rica 0 – 1 Serbia
Brazil 1 – 1 Switzerland
Brazil 2 – 0 Costa Rica
Navas kept it goal free for 90 mins.
Serbia 1 – 2 Switzerland
Swiss defenders hold on to Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Shaqiri scores in the 90th minute, strips off in celebration and gets a yellow card.
Switzerland 2 – 2 Costa Rica
A penalty in the 94th minute hits the crossbar and then into the Swiss goalie, giving Costa Rica and equalising goal.
Germany 0 – 1 Mexico
The longest 3 minutes ever!
South Korea 1 – 2 Mexico
Germany 2 – 1 Sweden
The Swedish goal worked so hard, but a last second a snazzy goal from Germany lost them the game.
South Korea 2 – 0 Germany
The last 10 minutes of this game!
“The biggest VAR goal EVER!”
In the last minute Neuer went wandering and left the goal open for South Korea to score again. And shockingly, Germany were out.
England 2 – 1 Tunisia
A pitch full of midges & Harry Kane’s 91st minute winner.
Belgium 5 – 2 Tunisia
A game of goals!
England 6 – 1 Panama
Watching England win at my local pub The Sov.
England 0 – 1 Belgium
Acrobatics instead of goal saving.
Panama 1 – 2 Tunisia
Wahbi Khazri scores Tunisia’s 3rd goal of the match, and does that hands-into-a-heart thing that gymnasts do.
Colombia 1 – 2 Japan
Carlos Sanchez gets the first red card of the tournament within minutes of kick off and Colombia play as 10.
Poland 1 – 2 Senegal
Watching at work. Carole shouting at the telly.
Japan 2 – 2 Senegal

Senegal had the same points/goals as Japan, but more yellow cards, so they had to go home.
Cafe Oto, April 15th 2018
This was my dream gig. I hadn’t seen the Pastels play before, and I have loved their music for more than 30 years. For them to be playing with Ela Orleans promised to be the best thing ever. I was not disappointed. Ela Orleans did a ‘greatest hits’ set which was amazing, and then The Pastels took the stage and I thought I might cry because it was so beautiful.
Hoxton Hall 12 April 2018
I hadn’t been to Hoxton Hall since the mid 90s, I played there and it was falling to bits. I remember that a lot of the building was boarded up because it was unsafe, but now it’s been done up with lottery grants and is a fab place. Gwenno was perfect to play there. We saw her a while back at Moth Club and she was great, but this gig was outstanding. She tried to get everyone singing along in Cornish to her cheese song, but our London ears are unused to Cornish words so we mumbled along awkwardly.
In the day time I went to the North Korean graphic design exhibition at House of Illustration, and thought it’d be fun to attempt to draw Gwenno in the style of the North Korean poster art.
Eng 2 – 1 Wales
I was shouting at the telly cos this was so exciting! I was supporting England, but it really looked as though Wales scored, so it could (should?) have been 2-2. The Welsh goalie Laura O’Sullivan absolutely ruled the match. But, England won the game, so they now lead their group. Roll on France 2019!
March 23 2018 Basingstoke Irish Centre
Rabies Babies played a gig in Basingstoke with a few bands, including Emergency Bitter.
To be honest, from the look of them I thought that they would play boring old style punk, but they were really good and funny. I absolutely want to see them play again. I hope we do more shows with them. I was very impressed with the look of their fantastic shoes and leads, so this is what I drew.
R.I.P.
Hollywood Sinners at the Finsbury.
A proper good fun Dirty Water Club night out.
USA 1 – ENG 0
The USA goalie’s massive gloves!
The Moth Club 7th March 2018
GER 2 – ENG 2
Faißt looked like a cool superhero, and White played like a superhero.
What a game! I was screaming at the screen (not screaming at the telly – cos the BBC only show women’s football on the ‘red button’, which is less jumpy than Channel 4’s effort for the Euros, and there was commentary too, but it still would be polite if they showed England games on the proper telly, and they showed the other games in the tournament too – I would have loved to have watched all of the games.
ENG 4 – FRA – 1
Soccer in a storm. The wind was so strong that the corner flags were bend right over.
My band Rabies Babies played at the Hand in Hand in Brixton, with Dealing With Damage, Slow Faction, PCF and Dingy Skipper.
Dingy Skipper turned out to be my very old friend Dick Ugly, formerly of Hackney anarcho punkers Ugly Beat, a band who I shared many a bill with back in the 1990s.
I love Dingy Skipper – sort of like if Johnny Cash and Woody Guthrie were Durham miners. This was his first gig, hopefully there will be many more.
I went to the ‘Making Her Mark’ exhibition at Hackney Museum.
Many incredible and courageous women are celebrated in the exhibition, but these shoes really struck me. They are so normal. They are smart, flat shoes. They are not fancy, they are not the shoes that you would imagine are ‘activist’ shoes. They are just normal shoes. I have shoes like this (for wearing on rare ‘smart’ occasions). Almost all women I know have these shoes.
Nicola Thorp got sent home from work for wearing these shoes. I’m not sure what Nicola Thorp’s job is, but it is not a firefighter or builder or mountaineer, (all of which are professions that these shoes are unsuitable for). Nicola Thorp got sent home for wearing these shoes because at her work place the dress code for women is to have high heeled shoes. This was in 2015.
Nicola Thorp decided to complain about this. She started an online petition, which led to unfair and sexist dress codes being discussed in parliament.
So, Nicola Thorp’s normal shoes, which look so normal, and not at all the shoes of an activist, are changing laws.
Hurrah for Nicola and her shoes!
I love The Fall and I always will.
I saw The Fall so many times. Sometimes they ruled so much and they were the greatest band on earth. Sometimes they were shite.
Thank you Mark E. Smith, for making the albums that were so influential to me.
My little friend Ozzy is three.
Happy Birthday Ozzy!
Ramsgate Music Hall, 20th Oct 2017
Not the first time seeing the fantastic Jane Weaver, but our first time in Ramsgate.
The music hall is brilliant, it was a joy seeing Jane Weaver there.
This quick sketch was done in the bar afterwards.
Euros Childs and Oh Peas! at the Sebright Arms. 19th Nov 2017.
My first trip to the Sebright Arms since it’s been done up. The gig room is loads better than before, but it is about £6 a pint. Before the gig we had food at a place 2 mins down the road called VegItalian; a cafe on a double decker bus that does vegan & veg food. It was v good.
Rosie Oh Peas! was support act and backing band for Euros. For her set she played guitar and sang (no effects or keyboards this time), and then for her backing band stint she moved between keys, drums and guitar.
Euros Childs plays in London yearly, when he has a new album to tour and each time it is with a different backing band and always different, always good. He played some older stuff, including my favourite song about dog shit from last years album Refresh and a lot of stuff from the new album House Arrest. He’s got some new keyboards and was using his phone as a drum machine, which sounded surprisingly alright.

A short animation I made celebrating Laika the dog, who went to space in Sputnik 2 Sixty years ago today. The soundtrack is a recording from my band, Mofam.
At Oslo, Hackney. 5th October 2017.
This was a really special gig. The Liminañas blew me away. Their set was part beautiful pop, part cool groovy 60s French pop, part psychedelic, and sometimes a wall of guitar fuzz. Always absolutely fantastic. This was their first gig in London. I hope they will come again soon.
At the Shaklewell Arms, London.
I can’t find any information about Xavier, they sound a bit like Boredoms but more groovy. I loved their set and I hope I get to see them again.
Snapped Ankles remind me of an 80’s squat party band; anarchic, visual and drum heavy. I’ve never seen the Shacklewell Arms so packed and everyone was dancing. You can’t not enjoy Snapped Ankles.
