Illustrated lyrics for a zine to go with a song that I wrote about how men in punk bands seem to be able to get away with sexual assault.

I also used the drawings to make a lyric video for the song.

Brexit

On saturday there was the People’s Vote March to demand that the people get the final say on Brexit. These excited kids were at my local overground station. They were so full of hope that their facepaint and home made banners and t-shirts would make a difference.

On the train was this cute little toddler, he seemed to love his little banner.

The whole of London was packed with people with home made banners and EU flags. It took us two hours to get from Bond Street Tube to the start of the march on Park Lane and a further three hours to get to Trafalgar Square – I didn’t make it to Parliment because I had to leave by 5pm to get to a gig. Along the way there was so many colourful characters of all ages, but this lady’s banner ‘Old person against Brexit’ stayed in my head.

 

Gina Martin

Gina Martin is an inspiration and hero.  

In summer 2017 Gina was at a music festival when she became aware that a man standing nearby had taken a photo up her skirt of her crotch and was sharing the picture with his friends in the crowd. She grabbed his phone, despite him being quite a bit bigger than her, and ran to the police with it. She was horrified that the police told her that they could not do anything. 

But, Gina didn’t give up, she started an online petition and began campaigning to make up-skirting a criminal offence. 

A few days ago a law was passed so that now ‘up skirting’ is a sexual offence in England and Wales. We have Gina Martin to thank for bringing about this well overdue law. 

Shoes

I went to the ‘Making Her Mark’ exhibition at Hackney Museum.

Many incredible and courageous women are celebrated in the exhibition, but these shoes really struck me. They are so normal. They are smart, flat shoes. They are not fancy, they are not the shoes that you would imagine are ‘activist’ shoes. They are just normal shoes. I have shoes like this (for wearing on rare ‘smart’ occasions). Almost all women I know have these shoes.

Nicola Thorp got sent home from work for wearing these shoes. I’m not sure what Nicola Thorp’s job is, but it is not a firefighter or builder or mountaineer, (all of which are professions that these shoes are unsuitable for). Nicola Thorp got sent home for wearing these shoes because at her work place the dress code for women is to have high heeled shoes. This was in 2015.

Nicola Thorp decided to complain about this. She started an online petition, which led to unfair and sexist dress codes being discussed in parliament.

So, Nicola Thorp’s normal shoes, which look so normal, and not at all the shoes of an activist, are changing laws.

Hurrah for Nicola and her shoes!

 

 

ELECTION NIGHT

We stayed up with snacks, beer and tea til 6am watching the election on TV. Most exciting election this century. Lord Buckethead should have won Maidenhead, he wouldn’t be doing deals with line-dance hating thugs. This is my drawing of the Maidenhead results being called, Last Supper style. #nosleeptilhastings

I want my little friend Ozzy to grow up with healthcare, housing, education, opportunities, freedom and tolerance. We will get none of those if the Tories get in again. #VoteLabour #KickOutTheTories

Stop Bombing Children!

Not a gig, but this little girl needed drawing. She was so amazing! She led the chanting for hours. Her strong clear voice shouting “FREE FREE PALESTINE!”. It was a massive march from Downing Street to the Israeli Embassy. Thousands of people of all kinds & colours demonstrating against the murder of children in Gaza. It was a boiling hot day, and many of the Muslims were fasting for Ramadan. We arrived late (due to Sleaford Mods the night before), but caught up with the march half way through.
